Audio-Technica AT2020 USB Mic Review

AT202 USB - A Great USB Microphone from Audio-Technica

With an entry-level design and an easy-to-use USB design, this may be one of the convenient vocal microphones on the market!

The AT2020 is easily one of the best valued microphones on the market when it comes to price. Since the original introduction of the original AT2020, the company has finally released a version that utilizes USB instead of XLR, making it easier than ever to record directly into your computer without an interface or preamp. If you are a singer who is just getting started with your own home studio, you might find that feature extremely helpful. Plus, the AT2020-USB works with both Mac and Windows, and comes with everything else that you need to get started, including a microphone mount, USB cable, and storage pouch.

The Good

This is one of the most convenient microphones around for singers who are looking to get their songs recorded quickly and efficiently. All you have to do is plug it directly into the USB port on your laptop or desktop and start recording on whatever software that you prefer. It comes with a standard cardioid polar pattern that helps to get rid of nasty sounds from the back or sides of the microphone. This can really help if you are recording in a room that is untreated.

The microphone comes complete with a 10′ USB cable, meaning you can record while standing pretty far away from your computer. This can be helpful to get rid of fan noise from your computer and can also be used to route the microphone to your home vocal booth.

The Bad

The frequency range is not the best in the world, especially compared to other condenser microphones. It runs from 20 Hz to about 16 kHz, meaning you may not get that really high and airy sound that you desire. Unfortunately, there is no DI that comes out of the microphone, so you may have to deal with that annoying latency that often comes from monitoring.

Final Verdict

It may not be anything to compare to the likes of Neumann Condenser microphones, though the AT2020 USB is an excellent choice if you are in the market for a budget microphone that doesn’t cost a ton and performs well enough to use for amateur recordings. For demos, it’s an absolute steal.
