Learn How To Sing for Beginners
Feb 03, 2020Do you love singing?
If you are someone who wants to commit to improving your singing voice, you must understand that the process is far more than learning your lyrics or holding a tune. To learn how to sing for beginners, most people end up taking voice lessons. Voice lessons are a wonderful way to have your voice, posture, breath, and every other aspect of your voice examined.
There are a lot of things to remember when learning to sing, but to give you a good start, here are the top 5 things you need to remember as a beginner singer!
1. Keep Your Voice Healthy
Remember, your voice is just as much an instrument as any other instrument. Similar to the way a guitarist will change his or her strings, a singer must understand what it means to care for the voice to help prevent fatigue or damage. One of the best ways to care for your voice is to make sure that you stay hydrated, eat well, and get enough sleep.
From that point, you want to make sure that you have a proper warmup implemented into your routine so that you don’t start your singing day with strain.
2. Get Your Breath Down
One of the most important foundational aspects of singing is the breath. Many new singers begin by breathing vertically instead of horizontally, meaning they fill their chest up with air and lift their shoulders. The more air you have pushed up into your shoulder and chest region, the less your breath will do for you. The goal as a singer is to breathe into your diaphragm in a balloon-like motion.
Here are some good vocal breath workouts to get you started:
3. Improve Your Posture
Your body is your instrument, and if your instrument is sluggish, your sound will be too. Pay attention to your posture if you feel like your singing voice is held back. The more you slouch, the harder singing becomes. Having the correct posture will help to open up space in our lungs so that we can breathe and expand without much effort. Here are a few things to remember:
- Keep your head straight on your neck with your chin slightly down to help keep your jaw loose
- Keep your neck straight without craning it forward to allow it to streamline along with your spine
- Float your shoulders into a neutral position, keeping them relaxed
- Relax your arms down at your sides. Don’t clench your fists or fidget with your clothing
- Make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart to balance your body
4. Find Your Vocal Range
There are hundreds of incredible singers out there with insane four or five-octave vocal ranges. Who wouldn’t love to hit Mariah Carey’s angelic whistle notes or Johnny Cash’s sultry low notes? Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to do those things, and that is okay. It is important to work with a vocal coach to find your own vocal range so that you can keep it in mind when selecting new songs to work on or practicing during your day to day. Of course, don’t ever feel like you’re limited because of your vocal type.
5. Continue To Improve By Staying Motivated
If you can, practice every single day. Structure your singing practice so that you get a quality and effective workout every time. You don’t need to practice for hours on end every day to be a good singer. Even a simple and consistent 30-minute routine will get you to where you want to go. Make your practice sessions FUN too. The important thing is that you stay motivated and know that it’s all about the journey.
Becoming A Great Singer!
As a beginner, the path to becoming a pro singer can seem overwhelming. Remember to take it one day at a time and be confident that you will eventually reach the point you want to be at. No one ever started out as a pro! It takes hard work and dedication to be a great singer, so be ready to put in the work if you truly want it.
